In recent times, the computer is playing an important role in your daily life and more and more persons use a computer to cope with things in work and life. Due to the merits of Windows 10, the latest operating system is installed.
As time goes by, disk management is getting a common issue in Windows 10. For example, more and more data are stored on the disk partition so that disk space is running out, and then you need to repartition your hard disk; or there is something wrong with the file system, to format partition is a good solution; or you want to create many partitions on the disk by changing the disk partition table type to GPT. In these cases, it is necessary to manage disk or partition.
Usually, the Windows 10 built-in Disk Management tool is the first choice for managing your disk. Generally speaking, it supports some basic disk or partition management operations, such as extend/shrink partition, format partition, create partition or dynamic volume (simple, striped, spanned, mirrored and RAID 5 volume), change drive letter, convert dynamic disk to basic, convert disk between MBR and GPT, and so forth.
From the above part, you know Windows Disk Management can be used to do many operations for disk or partition. However, this free tool is not working in many cases and here we will give you a detailed explanation in three aspects.
As you know, low disk space issue is ubiquitous. After using the computer for a period of time, there will be more and more files or folders saved on the hard drive of your computer. Then, the disk space gets less and less. Moreover, Windows will show you low disk space warning on your drive, especially C drive saying “You are running very low on disk space on Local Disk (C:). Click here to see if you can free space on this drive”.

Under this circumstance, to expand partition becomes an option. Usually, Windows 10 disk utility is available to extend or shrink partition size. Nevertheless, when right clicking the target partition, the pop-up window shows you gray “Extend Volume” feature.
Why? Disk Management only extends or shrinks partition which must be in NTFS or RAW file system. What’s more, there must be unallocated space or free space immediately following the target partition, otherwise, you can’t extend partition with Windows 10 Disk Management.
In order to resize partition effectively, a piece of third-party Windows 10 partition manager should be used. Here we highly recommend you to ask MiniTool Partition Wizard for help. It has many features, such as resize/remove partition, extend partition, format/delete/align partition, migrate OS, clone disk and more. Here its “Move/Resize Partition” and “Extend Partition” are useful here.
Select the target drive to click “Extend Partition”. Then take free space from other partition and finally click “Apply” to perform this operation.
Or use its “Move/Resize Partition” to increase partition size by dragging handle when there is unallocated space adjacent to the target drive.
Sometimes you want to convert NTFS to FAT32 for a better compatibility with old game consoles or convert FAT32 to NTFS for large file storage. Windows 10 Disk Management can only do the conversion by formatting the partition, which will lead to data loss. What’s more, this tool only formats partition smaller than 32GB to FAT32.
In order to do the conversion between NTFS and FAT32 without losing data, MiniTool Partition Wizard is also useful. You can free convert FAT to NTFS, but its “Convert NTFS to FAT” is a paid feature.
If you need to convert MBR disk to GPT for more partition creation or change the disk to MBR for old OS installation, Windows 10 Disk Management not working issue also exists. Here from the screenshot below, you see “Convert to GPT Disk” is grayed out unless all partitions of the disk are deleted.
Windows disk utility only converts an empty disk to MBR/GPT. If there are many files saved on your disk, data loss will appear by this way. In order to do the conversion between MBR and GPT without data loss, MiniTool Partition Wizard is still your good choice.
In this post, we show you three aspects that Windows 10 Disk Management works not well and meanwhile give the corresponding solution. With the help of the professional Windows 10 partition manager - MiniTool Partition Wizard, you can effectively manage your disk and partition.
