So you’ve just switched to Mac and you are trying to take a screenshot of something on your computer but wait, there is no Print Screen Button? No Snipping Tool? Luckily, Apple has included many different ways of taking screenshots on your Mac.

Take Screenshots in Mac OS X

Grab Application

On your hard drive under Applications > Utilities you will find an application called Grab. Once you open the application you can go to Capture at the top of your screen and choose the type of screenshot you would like – Selection, Window, Screen or Timed Screen.

The screenshot above was taken with the Selection option, which allowed me to drag a box around the area I wanted to select. Once you have made your choice it will open your new screenshot and ask you what to name it and where to save it.

Terminal

You can also take screenshots in the terminal using the screen capture command. Here are a few examples:

Take a screenshot of the entire screen and save it to the desktop:

screencapture -S ~/Desktop/screenshot.jpg

Take a screenshot of the entire screen and place it on the clipboard:

screencapture -Sc

Take a screenshot of a window and save it to the desktop:

screencapture -iW ~/Desktop/screenshot.jpg

Take a screenshot of a section of the screen saving to the desktop

screencapture –i -/Desktop/screenshot.jpg

There you have it. As you can see OS X gives you a ton of options for taking screenshots and it really is way more than you have had before if you are a Windows user.
